Complex: Staged Reading and Talkback
- Performances
After a celebrated run at SummerWorks, Complex returns for a one-night-only engagement with the Koffler Centre of the Arts.
From imaginary numbers to one of Toronto’s most notorious neighbourhoods, Complex follows the relationship between a University of Toronto math major and a teenager growing up in Chalkfarm. Fascinated by the community’s dangerous reputation, she becomes a volunteer tutor for the “at-risk” high school student. We watch as she begins to latch on to the young man, who’s struggling for reasons she’d never expect. The talkback will feature the playwright (Rebecca Applebaum), director (Margaret Evans), producer (Nicholas Hutcheson), and cast (Tim Walker, Mazin Elsadig, Beryl Bain, Emily Piggford). This is not a ticketed event. Seating is limited will be given on a first-come-first-serve-basis.
Praise for Complex
From Post City: “full of wit and subtle tones, and Applebaum examines mental health issues and class and cultural misconceptions with insight.”
From Life With More Cowbell (Cathy McKim): “Complex is a beautifully layered exploration of relationships, class, the struggle for order, math theory and mental illness.”
