Music That Survived

Performance 3:30 PM
Temple Emanu-El, 120 Old Colony Road (MAP/DIRECTIONS)
Inspired by the theme for Holocaust Education Week: “We Who Survived”, the celebrated Koffler Chamber Orchestra performs music that survived the persecution of Jewish artists in Eastern Europe during WWII and has only received prominence in the post-war years, shaking loose the suffocating Nazi label of “degenerate art.” Many Jewish composers fled Europe to Israel and North America and others created new work against all odds in the ghettos and camps, demonstrating how the creative spirit triumphs over darkness and evil. The horrors of the war are also tangible in music of Jewish composers creating after the Holocaust. This moving repertoire is performed under the direction of acclaimed violinist, Jacques Israelievitch.
This Koffler Chamber Orchestra performance features the top Canadian cellist, Shauna Rolston, recognized by the press, peers and fans alike to be one of the most compelling and distinctive musical voices of her generation. Praised for her blazing technique and her ability to captivate the imagination and touch the heart of each audience member, Shauna continues to delight and astonish with a busy schedule of concerts, recordings and world premieres. http://www.shaunarolston.com/
FREE pre-concert talk at 2:30 PM: "Singing of Love and Resistance: Soviet Yiddish Folk Creativity during World War II" with Professor Anna Shternshis (Al and Malka Green Associate Professor of Yiddish and Diaspora Studies; Associate Director for Centre for Jewish Studies University of Toronto). What do people sing about when there is no hope, when the children are gone, and when hunger prevails? What do they sing about when they have lost touch with their families in Eastern Europe? The newly found collection of Yiddish songs, recorded by Soviet folklorists from 1943 to 1947 provides some answers. This talk will introduce and explore a newly discovered body of music that Russian Jews sang during World War II.

Presented together with the 30th annual Holocaust Education Week, presented by Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre, November 1 – 9, 2010.
