PAST CONCERTS
Mendelssohn and More
Sunday, November 22 | Pre-concert Talk 2:30 PM
Performance 3:30 PM
Temple Emanu-El, 120 Old Colony Road (
MAP/DIRECTIONS)
$20 | $15 Seniors | $8 Students

Under the direction of Jacques Israelievitch, the Koffler Chamber Orchestra season debuts with a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn. This gifted composer was a fervent supporter of Bach who in turn championed Vivaldi, and the rest is music history! The music of the three composers will be performed by three of the most talented, young violinists in Ontario, sisters Chantal, Nicole and Rachelle Li (pictured).

Join a pre-concert talk at 2:30 PM with Professor Kalman Weiser, Moses, Abraham, and Felix Mendelssohn: proud Jews, ambivalent Christians

Many view Moses Mendelssohn as the first "modern" Jew, a man who through his own example illustrated the possibility of harmonizing Jewish and European identities. For others, he is the accursed father of Jewish assimilationism in Europe , as evidenced by the conversion to Christianity of his own son Abraham and of his grandson, the musical prodigy Felix. This talk considers attitudes toward religion among three generations of this famous family as a key to understanding the reconceptualization of Judaism and Jewish identity that fundamentally changed Jewish life in the modern era.
