Suzuki Violin

The Suzuki Method
The Suzuki method was developed as an approach to teaching music to young children by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in Japan. Students can start at a very young age, with smaller sized instruments. The age range for beginners is from 3 to 9 years old. Dr. Suzuki believed that the approach music learning should be similar to the learning of language.

The Hallmarks of the Suzuki method are:

Listening
Each day the parent will play the CD of the Suzuki pieces so the child becomes familiar with the sound of the instrument and memorises the melodies they are learning.  Music reading is left to later in the process when the child has already learned to play a few pieces.

Parents participate
Parents attend every lesson and take notes so they can work with the child at home during the daily practise sessions. No previous musical experience is required, the parents learn as the child progresses.

Repetition
In each lesson the student is given a very specific set of practise instructions, the parent notes these down and works with the student at home during their practise sessions.

Private and ensemble lessons
Both individual and ensemble playing are fostered from the beginning.
