For over three decades, the Koffler Centre of the Arts has been synonymous with cutting-edge innovation in the creation and presentation of arts and culture in the Greater Toronto Area. Established in 1977, the vision has been to enrich the cultural life of residents across the city through arts education and exhibitions. Over the years, this has been achieved – and surpassed - through a vast array of classes in dance, music, and visual arts and a repertoire of innovative public programs known for their excellence. Concerts of classical, modern, and contemporary music, literary events, family festivals, film screenings, and more, have not only entertained and thrilled countless audiences, but enlightened and inspired them as well. The Koffler Gallery has been home to cutting edge contemporary Canadian art, drawing critical praise and community participation. The Gallery has been a valuable community resource as a provider of school and community outreach programs, a new teen docent program, and regular public tours.
As part of the Tomorrow Campaign project, the new 40,000-square-foot Koffler Centre of the Arts will be one of the signature buildings of the remarkable Sherman Campus. Its distinctive circular architecture expresses the dynamism of what will be within. On the main level, a 4,000-square-foot museum-quality exhibition gallery; and state-of-the-art studios for painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, multi-media design, and sculpture. Upstairs, studios for dance and music study as well as recital spaces all look out on the magnificent ravine setting. Uniting it all, at the building’s core, is a two-story high central Rotunda flooded with natural light. This is where people and art will come together to generate a true sense of community.
The Koffler’s evolving mission is to create a more civil and global society by fostering mutual understanding through the exploration of arts and culture. The Koffler’s unique mix examines the arts across different disciplines and cultures in a way that strengthens identity while encouraging an appreciation of difference. Expressing the spirit and essence of contemporary culture within a Jewish context, the Koffler reflects a global perspective. At the Koffler there will be an ongoing flurry of activity—filmmakers and filmgoers, writers and readers, composers and musicians, dancers, painters, and arts enthusiasts of all kinds from around the world will come to create and exhibit, perform and listen, view and debate, learn and share.
