An integral part of the Koffler Centre of the Arts, the Koffler Gallery presents innovative artwork in a range of media by contemporary Canadian and international artists. While reflecting diverse cultural and aesthetic orientations, the Gallery’s unique curatorial approach brings a Jewish focus to a larger exploration of identity, memory and place. Public art projects, from artist bookmarks to outdoor sculptures, introduce contemporary art into the fabric of everyday life. Publications, gallery talks, video screenings, visual displays and hands-on activities nurture the public’s appreciation for current artistic practices. Artist-in-residence programs deepen these insights and involve the community in the creative process.
The Koffler Gallery School Programs aim to facilitate a greater awareness of
contemporary
art in its many forms, recognizing its relevance in both shaping and interpreting our social relations, our sense of identity and our understanding of the world around us. Exploring art-making as a tool for inward and outward discovery, our programs promote experiences that inform and challenge young audiences, encouraging analytical thinking, creative self-confidence and effective communication.
Exhibition tours offer students the opportunity to engage the Gallery as a forum for dialogue around contemporary cultural, social, linguistic and aesthetic concerns. Students learn to analyze the artwork on display through a guided discussion led by the Gallery Educator who provides contextual information while encouraging personal interpretation. Hands-on workshops complement and enhance the Gallery visit, broadening the participants’ own ways of thinking and creating. Ontario curriculum guidelines for visual arts, social sciences, language, science and technology inform the development of our school programs for both elementary and secondary levels. All tours and workshops are offered in English and French.
We look forward to an exciting year of sharing the creative vision and energy of today’s artists with you and your students!
