Fall/Winter 2009-10
Dear friends,
As I look forward to the season ahead of exhibitions, music and theatre performances, public programs, literary events, and arts, music, and dance classes, I marvel at the power of art to enlighten, inspire and build bridges between people and communities. Our ability to create art and engage with one another through art is what makes us human and brings out the best in ourselves.
There is a central Jewish value called Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) – that is certainly an inherent aspect of the Koffler’s mission. The Koffler is also committed to the concept of Kidum Olam (advancing civilization). We strive to be a place of dialogue and debate as well as one of invitation and hospitality. Let us celebrate together this new season.
This Fall and Winter we explore culture locally and globally providing opportunities for cutting-edge artists to create new work, and to bring artists from Canada and Israel together to engage with one another and our audiences. Highlights include exciting new thematic programs with the annual Jewish Book Fair, Israeli superstar Kobi Oz, electrifying world music with Jaffa Road, and the Toronto theatrical premiere of About the Oranges. Koffler Gallery exhibitions continue ‘on the road’ with Margins by the brilliant Joshua Neustein at the ROM, and the group exhibition “How good are your dwelling places” guest curated by Cyril Reade. There truly is something for everyone – both at our new home in the Gales Family Pavilion and off-site around the city!
Thanks to our Board of Directors, Trusteeship Council, the many families, individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies which support the Koffler and make all of what we do – and aspire to be – possible.
I invite you to be moved, be challenged, befriend. To arrive early to chat and stay late to share.
All of us at the Koffler – our staff, volunteers, faculty, and artists/presenters – look forward to seeing you soon.
